Generic green words stop being allowed this September

Directive (EU) 2024/825 adds to the European Union’s blacklist of always-unfair commercial practices the making of a generic environmental claim the trader cannot back with recognised excellent environmental performance, and any claim of neutral, reduced or positive greenhouse gas impact based on offsetting, with member states required to apply their implementing measures from 27 September 2026.

The named examples are the ordinary vocabulary of a beauty launch deck, so the copy that reads as harmless today is on a blacklist with a date on it, and the date is close enough that packaging now in production will outlive it.

    Constraint

Held since September 27, 2026A rule, law or policy that limits what you may do or say. The earliest date we are willing to say this held. It may well have been true before that; we do not backdate a record past the evidence we have read. Supported, version 1.

    This entry is wrong if

The Directive is repealed or its application date is deferred past 27 September 2026, or the Annex I amendments are struck before member states apply them.

Written before the record was published, not after. If you can show this, send it to hello@tryorbt.com and the correction goes on the record with the entry.

Examples of generic environmental claims include ‘environmentally friendly’, ‘eco-friendly’, ‘green’, ‘nature’s friend’, ‘ecological’, ‘environmentally correct’, ‘climate friendly’, ‘gentle on the environment’, ‘carbon friendly’, ‘ energy efficient’, ‘biodegradable’, ‘biobased’ or similar statements that suggest or create the impression of excellent environmental performance.

The list is from recital 9 rather than the enacting Annex, so it illustrates what the legislature had in mind rather than binding a court. It is quoted because the operative text bans a category and this is the legislature’s own account of what falls in it.
