Instalment payment is a US-origin habit in beauty
The half of US beauty that offers instalment payment is almost entirely one side of the corridor: 13 of 19 US-origin storefronts advertise Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm or Sezzle against 4 of 19 Korean-origin ones, on storefronts where both groups advertise PayPal at the same rate.
Instalment is what lets a $60 basket be sold as $15, so a brand without it is priced against competitors whose shelf price is the same and whose asking price is not.
- Limits how to read Korean brands ship a thinner US checkout
74 of a possible 90Tier B, systematic first-party observation. Nothing at this tier is allowed past 90, however good it looks.
Verified September 9, 2026Rechecked every 60 days, next by November 8, 2026.
Held since August 5, 2026What is expected behaviour here. The earliest date we are willing to say this held. It may well have been true before that; we do not backdate a record past the evidence we have read. Supported, version 3.
This entry is wrong if
A repeat run finds Korean-origin storefronts within 30 points of the US-origin share on any instalment provider, or a checkout-side read finds instalment offered at payment on storefronts that do not advertise it earlier.

Payment badges fingerprinted on the storefront homepage, which records what is advertised before checkout rather than what checkout accepts. afterpay is the widest apart: 11 of 19 US-origin against 3 of 19 Korean-origin. PayPal is the control and shows no gap: 19 of 19 and 19 of 19. Retailers are excluded from both origin groups: OLIVE YOUNG Global, Peach & Lily, Soko Glam, Stylevana. Their catalogues are other companies’ product copy, so counting them by the storefront’s own origin would put Korean listings inside the US-origin group. Run commerce-20260805140548.

History
- v3corrected
Correction. The retirement recorded above was an operator error, not a finding. The derivation was run against collector run commerce-20260805053004 while that crawl was still in flight and had reached 4 of 66 storefronts, so every claim whose storefronts it had not yet read failed its sample gate and was retired. 44 claims were retired in one command for that reason. The claim was re-derived the same day from collector run commerce-20260805051110, a complete 66 of 66 crawl, and holds. Nothing about the market changed between the two records. The retirement stays in this log because the log is not edited; this entry is what it means. The instrument now refuses to derive from a run missing more than a tenth of the seeded storefronts, and a claim returning from retired now files its own status revision, which is why this correction had to be written by hand rather than appearing on its own.
- v2retired
Retired against collector run commerce-20260805053004: payment reads too thin (KR 2, US 0; need 8 each). The claim held on the sample available when it was written and does not hold on this one.
